Constitution Convention Paper
Now that the Constitution Convention has come to a close, it is time to bring the results of your hard work back to your state. In two to three paragraphs, lay out your argument for choosing to ratify or not ratify the Class Constitution. Your argument should include a response to the following questions:
- Did you ratify the constitution?
o Why or why not?
o Did your state achieve all three of its Major Concerns (listed on your individual state sheet)?
o Were you forced to compromise in order to get what you really wanted?
- If you were able to achieve all three Major Concerns, why do you think your state was able to achieve these goals?
- If you were not able to achieve these goals, why not and what did you gain (if anything) in the compromise or decision made by the class?
A few reminders:
- Proof read your responses - out loud if possible
- Be sure to fully answer each question (check to make sure you've answered each part of the question)
- Attempt to avoid the use of I, us, we, our
- Make sure you know what the Class Constitution says (SEE BELOW)

CLASS CONSTITUTION:
- SLAVERY: slave holding states will release half of their slaves over the next two years and received a 17% discount on taxes for those two years. Slavery is outlawed in the West. The slave trade is outlawed
- FUG. SLAVE LAW: It is the slave owners responsibility to catch their runaway slaves
- REPRESENTATION IN NATIONAL LEGISLATURE: number of representatives in the legislature will be determined by the population of the state BUT each state will only have one vote (one state/one vote). Slaves will not be considered part of the population in determining number of representatives.
- NATIONAL TAXES: Equal taxes for each state until the war debt is paid off. Once the debt is paid off, the group will reconvene to discuss a new tax plan.
- NATIONAL EXECUTIVE: People will vote for desired executive. The top three candidates (get most votes nationwide) will go to Congress and Congress will decide on the nation's executive. Executive will serve for 4 years.
