Course Description:
This survey course focuses upon the broad intellectual, social, political, and cultural developments that shaped the history of the United States from early exploration and colonial settlement to the present day. Themes include the formation of a national identity, the creation of the Constitution, the Civil War, and the emergence of the United States as a world power during the 20th century. Through this experience, you should learn not just factual material but also improve your ability to think critically, read actively, participate frequently and effectively, write clearly and have fun studying history.
